The Documented Record
Ireland's Mother and Baby Homes Commission final report, published January 2021, established that approximately 9,000 children died in the 18 institutions investigated; the Taoiseach apologized the same month. [DOCUMENTED]
Belgian federal prosecutors arrested and charged Eva Kaili and other suspects in December 2022 in the Qatargate investigation, seizing about 1.5 million euros in cash; Kaili was removed as Parliament vice-president, and the defendants deny wrongdoing. [DOCUMENTED]
Sebastian Kurz resigned as Austrian chancellor in October 2021 amid a corruption investigation and was convicted in February 2024 of making false statements to a parliamentary inquiry, a verdict he appealed while denying wrongdoing. [DOCUMENTED]
Spain's Andalusian ERE case produced convictions of former regional officials including two former regional presidents in the country's largest public-funds fraud trial; in 2024 the Constitutional Court annulled or reduced several of those convictions, including the prison sentence of former president Grinan. What the Record Does Not Establish
Qatargate remains at the charge stage; no defendant named here has been convicted, and all deny wrongdoing. The Kurz conviction is under appeal. The ERE record now includes both the original convictions and their partial constitutional annulment, and the file states both because the record contains both.
