Four episodes across nearly a century establish a recurring pattern: a fabricated or manipulated account of Jewish or Israeli wrongdoing spreads faster and further than any correction that follows it. The 1929 Hebron massacre, the 2009 Swedish organ-harvesting story, the Danish cartoon crisis, and the Rushdie fatwa each involve a different mechanism, incitement, fabrication, manipulated evidence, and a violent international response, but each shares the same basic shape.
The Documented Record
August 1929: A wave of violence in Hebron and elsewhere, incited in part by false rumors regarding the Western Wall, left dozens dead. Britain's Shaw Commission and the subsequent Hope Simpson Report both examined the causes and context of the violence. [DOCUMENTED]
February 1989: Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling for the murder of author Salman Rushdie over his novel The Satanic Verses. Christopher Hitchens, writing contemporaneously, criticized parts of the Western liberal cultural establishment for using the language of tolerance to euphemize the intolerance of the fatwa itself. 2005 to 2006: Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten's publication of cartoons depicting Muhammad triggered riots across multiple countries. A dossier that circulated internationally in the aftermath included additional, more inflammatory images that had never actually been published by the newspaper. [DOCUMENTED]
August 2009: Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet published an article by Donald Bostrom implying the Israeli military harvested organs from Palestinians it killed. Sweden's prime minister and foreign minister stated they could not comment on the article's content without risking a violation of press freedom protections. [DOCUMENTED]
Following the Aftonbladet story, Israeli officials including then-Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz, Prime Minister Netanyahu, and a Foreign Ministry spokesperson publicly compared the organ-harvesting claim to historical blood libel accusations against Jews. [DOCUMENTED]

What the Record Does Not Establish
The record does not establish that any single mechanism, incitement, fabrication, or manipulated evidence, explains all four episodes; each has its own distinct documentary history and its own distinct rebuttal record. It does not establish that the blood libel comparison following the 2009 Aftonbladet story originated with any particular individual commentator rather than with the Israeli government officials who are the documented source of that comparison. The strongest rival explanation for the pattern's durability is ordinary media dynamics: an inflammatory initial claim reaches a wide audience quickly, while a more careful correction reaches a narrower one slowly, a dynamic that applies to false claims about many subjects and is not unique to this one.
