The File
On March 14, 2026, Tucker Carlson posted a video stating that the CIA had read his private text messages and was preparing a criminal referral against him to the Department of Justice, on the theory that his pre-war communications with people in Iran made him an unregistered agent of a foreign power under FARA. Carlson provided no evidence for the claim beyond his own account. Neither the CIA nor the DOJ has publicly confirmed or denied it.
The Documented Record
March 14, 2026: Carlson posted a video stating the CIA was preparing a criminal referral against him over communications with people in Iran before the outbreak of war, saying "they read my texts." [DOCUMENTED]
March 14, 2026: Carlson stated the alleged violation under consideration was the Foreign Agents Registration Act, and denied acting as an agent of a foreign power, saying "I'm not an agent of a foreign power... I have only one loyalty and that's the United States." [DOCUMENTED]
March 15 to 16, 2026: Newsweek reported the claim and stated it was unable to independently verify it, noting neither the CIA nor DOJ had responded to inquiries. [DOCUMENTED]
March 15, 2026: Yahoo News independently reported the same statement, including Carlson's account that a similar incident occurred in 2021 when he says the NSA intercepted communications during his attempt to arrange the Putin interview. [DOCUMENTED]
The Foreign Agents Registration Act requires certain agents of foreign principals engaged in political activities to make periodic public disclosure of that relationship, activities, and finances, administered by the FARA Unit of the DOJ's National Security Division. [DOCUMENTED]
Neither the CIA nor the Department of Justice has publicly confirmed that any investigation or criminal referral exists. [DOCUMENTED]
What the Record Does Not Establish
The record does not establish that a CIA criminal referral against Carlson actually exists, that the CIA accessed his private communications, or that any FARA violation occurred. Carlson's claim is based entirely on his own account with no independent corroboration from any government source. The strongest rival explanation is that no referral exists and Carlson is characterizing ordinary political criticism or informal pressure as a formal legal threat, a framing that serves his narrative of being targeted for his views on Israel and Iran regardless of whether a referral is real. FARA prosecutions of journalists conducting foreign interviews are historically rare, and legal commentary generally treats the bar for such a charge as high.
